Certification of Equipment

Regulations and Standards apply to all household equipment that is sold or offered for sale in Australia and New Zealand.

Certain types of equipment, known as level 3 equipment, prescribed equipment or declared articles, must go through a certification process which ensures a safe design before they can be ready for the Australian or New Zealand market.

The list of level 3 / prescribed equipment requiring certification is in the latest edition of AS/NZS 4417.2 which can be purchased at SAI Global.

NSW Declared articles are as per the NSW gazetted list. For NSW requirements please visit http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au

Equipment that is not level 3 equipment / prescribed equipment / declared article can still be granted a voluntary certification, which can be used as a means to assist in showing the equipment meets legislative requirements.

Certificates under the EESS can be issued by electrical safety regulators and recognised external certifications schemes (RECS). For more detail see Certification on the EESS page.

Certificates under the NSW declared scheme can be issued by electrical safety regulators and, for declared articles only, by NSW recognised equipment approval schemes (REAS). For more details see NSW requirements at http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au
