Essential Performance Capabilities for Electricians

The Essential Performance Capabilities (EPCs) are a list of capabilities that electricians applying for an unrestricted electrical licence in an Australian state or territory are expected to have. As such, the EPCs inform the knowledge and skills in the qualification/s that are required under legislation for eligibility to apply for this licence.

First developed in 2001, and revised in 2014, the most recent version of the EPCs was endorsed by ERAC in 2024. Updates to the EPCs ensure that current technologies and updated safety practices are addressed, while removing obsolete content. The updated 2024 EPC’s may be found here: Essential Performance Capabilities 2024

The EPCs identify the evidence components, the depth of knowledge required for each component, and if practical demonstration of a skill is required.

In addition to the general list of capabilities, some capabilities are further identified as being critical for safety. These are indicated in red on the EPC document. Critical components must be included in a final assessment prior to the issuance of an unrestricted electrical licence, in addition to an initial assessment.
